NY Fashion Week: Where's the Color
Ok, so Fashion Week is in full swing in NY, and it's definitely cold out, as is evidenced by the almost complete white out in the tents. What happened to the color? And by that, I don't mean the clothes. What? Do colors only "pop" on pale sticks. Oh wait, Tracy Reese had black models, but then again, she's black. That red Lela Rose dress would have looked so much more striking on say someone a few shades darker. Nicole Miller, Donna Karen and Kimora obviously got the message.
It's not that I'm against the other models. Hell, I'm half white myself. But my black sensibilities are annoyed when I hear people talk about how fashion is for everyone, how it represents who we are as people and as a society, and yet there are so few models strutting their stuff who look like me.
And last I checked, black folks don't have nearly the same problems with eating. We tend to embrace out curves a bit more (Ok, so there is Nicole Richie, but really...). Hire a few more of us and you won't have to deal with as much controversy. Just a thought....
